In 2000, SCHS formed an association with the University of Newcastle and now operates as a Division of Newcastle Innovation, the commercial arm of the University of Newcastle, to provide training in all aspects of medicinal herbalism .

If your interest in herbalism is a personal desire to know more about the use and value of medicinal herbs, SCHS has over 30 units of study that cover all aspects of herbalism.  Units can be individually selected with most able to be undertaken by self-paced distance learning through tapes or CDs often supplemented with written material although a few will require some face-to-face contact.

An entry non-accredited course to obtain a formal herbal qualification is the Certificate of Herbalism which is a 2-unit program that gives a basic knowledge of the history and practice of herbalism and herbal preparations and can be helpful for those who are in a retail position in either a pharmacy or a health food store.

SCHS also offers a range of short courses which can range in duration from 1-7 days.  The audience for these courses range from consumers to potential herbal growers, health professionals such as pharmacists, nutritionists and medical practitioners, and herbalists wanting to update their skills.  These courses are mostly given by face-to-face delivery on the Central Coast of NSW, although tapes and notes of past courses are often available for purchase.

A Diploma in Phytotherapy is offered as a professional extension course for currently qualified health care practitioners to obtain an adequate knowledge of herbal medicine to be used as a secondary clinical modality.  The course is available externally and equates to 13 seminar days presented by tapes and lecture material.  In 2009, the 13 days course will also be available by face-to-face seminars held once a month at Ourimbah (expected commencing date Feb 2009). .

To find more information on all these training courses, click on the COURSES icon and go to the appropriate section.

SCHS also sells a range of books, tapes and DVDs on medicinal herbalism and herbal products that complement many of the training courses but can be purchased for personal reading.  For more details, click on the SCHS SHOP icon
